Young Living Essential Oils and Colon Massage for Headaches

The other night as I languished in bed suffering with an achy-breaky summer bug of some sort, it dawned on me that I had a secret that I have not shared with you yet.  It is a magical, wonderful secret that could bring you relief from a multitude of ills, including constipation, headaches, flatulence, bloating, fatigue and infidelity. Okay, not infidelity.  I was just testing to see if you were paying attention.  But it is a great technique for your home-remedy arsenal if you or a member of your family is suffering from any other of the above maladies.

My secret?  It is the colon massage.  I learned about it many years ago as I studied macrobiotics with Michio Kushi in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.  And now I am going to share it with you.  The advantage for you is, by combining therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living, you are increasing the effectiveness of this technique many-fold.

The colon massage is an abdominal massage that stimulates peristalsis, or the muscular contractions of the intestines.  It helps to relieve stagnation of the colon and to get things moving once again.

According to macrobiotics, our food choices can cause headaches.  For example, eating too much salt and animal products could give us a squeezing, viselike pain in the back of our heads.  A frontal headache can be caused by overindulging in sugar, chocolate, alcohol and fruit juice.  And side head pain can be caused by taking excessive greasy, oily food.  So, the next time you are stuck in the throes of a pounding headache, give yourself a colon massage using Young Living Essential Oils and see if you find relief.

How to Do a Colon Massage

Heads up!  Remember wondering why in Heaven’s name you needed to learn about the human body in high school science?  Here’s yet another example of how we use our science education in our everyday life.  Recall that the colon begins on the lower right side of the abdomen and continues upward to the bottom of the ribcage. It crosses the stomach and a longer portion of the colon drapes down the left side and connects to the rectum, deep in the center of our body.

To begin, lie down on a flat surface, preferably on a bed or the floor.  Bend your knees.  Apply a few drops of peppermint or Di-Gize therapeutic grade essential oil from Young Living.  Both are excellent for digestive issues.  Fennel would be another fine choice.  (If the oils are too intense, just rub a small amount of unscented carrier oil on top of the essential oil.)  With a closed fist or the tips of your fingers, begin massaging on the right side of the abdomen and work in a clockwise direction up, across and down the left side in small circles. Follow the path of the large intestine.  Take your time. There is no reason to rush through the massage. Massage at least 1-2 minutes before moving to the next area. Pressure can be applied during the massage. How much pressure depends on the tolerance level of each individual.  Usually you will find an area that is exceptionally tender downright painful.  This is the area where you want to concentrate your massage.  And it really is not the time to be a namby-pamby*.  Get in there and massage with conviction, because more than likely, your headache is originating from that very spot.

Continue massaging until you feel your headache dissipating or your abdomen feels squishy and the tender spots are not quite so tender any longer.  I like to do at least 3-4 complete passes over the large intestine followed with the finale of gently kneading the center of my abdomen, or small intestine.  You might find that you will release gas or you may have to use the bathroom.  Both of these are good signs.

I prefer to perform my own colon massages.  You, on the other hand, might choose for someone else to do the massaging.  The technique is still the same.  Up the right side, across and down the left.  If you do have someone available who can do foot reflexology, complete your session with them working on your large intestine vita-flex points in the same direction and using the same essential oils.

Colon massages can help to ease colic in babies and soothe digestive upset or headaches in children.   Be sure to dilute the essential oil 50:50 before applying to their sensitive skin.  For newborns, just massage lightly in a clockwise direction without the essential oils, opting to put the peppermint or Di-Gize on the bottoms of their feet instead.  You can also teach children how to do colon massage for themselves.
